ReplyDeleteI wonder who the American chasers will be. It will probably be somebody like Ken Jennings who will do a good job, but if they need more chasers, I hope that they let quizbowlers like Matt Weiner and Andrew Yaphe at least audition for the part. Yaphe is the American Kevin Ashman, and should be on the show anyway.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Matt Weiner would want to do it? Isn't he very much a purist? I can't imagine that he would, though I don't really know and I'd like to be wrong. I imagine it will be people like Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and Ed Toutant, though I'd love to see Andrew Yaphe. Though there is no chance of them using the difficult questions which would really demonstrate how good he is.
DeleteWell, it's not like Eggheads uses questions that show how good Kevin Ashman is, either, but people still seem to recognize that he's a great quizzer. You're right that Matt Weiner probably wouldn't do it, but I was just trying to think of someone who had a wide array of both academic and pop cultural knowledge. I guess that Chris Ray may have been a better example instead of Matt Weiner.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see who actually does this. I am not familiar with any of the names you mentioned but it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
ReplyDeleteIt will definitely be interesting. Hopefully this pans out well enough that there will be an American version of Only Connect.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Only Connect is absolutely brilliant, I wouldn't hold your breath for US version. Whilst the Chase is in a prime spot every night of the week on one of the biggest channels (5pm ITV) Only Connect is tucked away on digital channel BBC Four with hardly as much exposure or ratings. Only Connect is perhaps the best quiz show on TV behind Mastermind though!
