The bookstores are full of titles commemorating the First World at at present. Max Hastings "Catastrophe" being just one amongst many but I doubt there are many finer title out there covering the period. Hastings has been one of the finest writers of his generation and this a detailed, engaging title which has the balance of stories and opinion just right. Despite being a long book it never gets boring and Hastings is as accessible and interesting as ever.
Sometimes the words "The Mammoth Book of...." can be a little off putting but not in this case. Travel in Dangerous Places is a great collection of writings from some of the explorers you have likely answered a thousand quiz questions about. Gripping and exciting reading with a fantastic selection chosen. Found it very useful in terms of cementing knowledge too!
