Lightning - New Quiz Show BBC2

First airing on Monday of this week, Lightning is the latest edition in BBC 2s early evening quiz slot. Zoe Lyons is the presenter and the show is 30 minutes of, as the title suggest, quick fire questions. There is very little hanging around, and a certain degree of luck in the gameplay, but at the core of the show there is a nice range of rapid questions and answers. I am not yet sure what I think of the  physical challenge which seems to be only round that makes the show drag, but aside from that Lightning is well worth your time!

Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #4 - Trivia UK

        Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #4

Trivia UK

The team behind Trivia UK are keen quizzers who I have had the pleasure of competing with in the Online Quiz League (link HERE if you are keen). The podcast was set during the first Lockdown I believe and each episode contains a raft of great questions in a good listenable format. When the first Lockdown ended it seemed that the show would be put on ice, but new episodes have returned recently so now is as good a time as any to jump in and catch up!

Jeopardy on UK Netflix

Just in case you have Netflix and haven't noticed (indeed I didn't until made aware as its tucked right away in there), several dozen episodes of the rather excellent US quiz show Jeopardy have been uploaded to the UK version on Netflix. Always top quality questions and players so well worth hunting down!

All Things Quiz - Quiz week

For any new readers who haven't had the chance to check it out yet......See above the latest Quiz Week news video from Gareths Kingstons fantastic All Things Quiz Youtube Channel. Make sure you follow the channel for ongoing quiz content.

Wednesday Night Individual Quizzing

On top of all the team based events going on across Zoom at the moment,  I recently started playing in a Wednesday Night individual based quiz, using MIMIR format, that is ran by the organisers of the QVQL. Its a superb quiz with a fun and friendly atmosphere and you literally will be pitting yourself against the very best. It starts at 9pm every wednesday, all you need is Zoom and you can find details on the facebook page HERE

Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #3 - PodQuiz

                                                         Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #3

PodQuiz

It hardly seems fair to conduct this Quiz Podcast series without mentioning the very first quiz podcast I discovered many years ago. A quick check shows that this has been running now for a staggering 824 episodes. The quiz includes a music round to kick off and themed rounds every week, only 20 questions so nice and quick to listen to. Most top players will score full marks, but it serves as a good learning tool to get those chestnuts in and keep sharp!

Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #2 - Four Play

                                                         Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #2

Four Play

Next in the series is another podcast from the team behind Trivial Warfare....this time its FourPlay. This is a connections based quiz game involving one contestant per episode and the best way to describe it to UK players is to think of the Only Connect connections wall. Its very tough, and ideally if you want to play along you will need a pen and paper but the clues and connections are inventive and after a few episodes you will certainly feel that your brain has had a workout!

Quizzing in 2021 - Lowbrow MIMIR

If my posts regarding the Quizzing events that have enriched 2020, then its probably worth mentioning a few ideas for Quizzing events you can get involved in in 2021!

Starting in mid-January, the Lowbrow MIMIR is the newest competition from the Online Quiz League. Quizzers from across the country (and indeed globe) will compete in this individual contest aimed at Lowbrow knowledge (see picture above for definition of what this covers). The MIMIR format involves 4 players competing at a time, and the way the structure works means that you will eventually be paired with people of your own level so games should be close, tight and above all else fun!

The setting team is the same one that are behind the fantastic questions on the Online Quiz League, so the quality is going to be high. Don't be daunted by the idea of individual quizzing!

You can sign up HERE and please mentioned The Quiz Addict or Daniel Fullard when you do so!

Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #1 - Trivial Warfare Blitz

In a new series of posts for January, and with the UK in the grip on another Lockdown, I thought it might be a good idea to recommended some quiz based podcasts for you to get stuck into this month.

And we start of with Trivial Warfare Blitz

Quiz Podcasts for Lockdown #1

Trivial Warfare Blitz

Many of you will maybe already heard of Trivial Warfare. One of the most successful quiz podcast around and based in the USA, the show has now over 300 episodes in the archive. The 'Blitz' version which I am suggesting here is an offshoot from the show in which contestants compete, 3 per episode, in a last man standing style game. A great range of questions, quick fire episodes and plenty to learn. This is ideal for passing time in those long lockdown days.

Quizzing in 2020 - Summary

I hope the series of posts on Quizzing in 2020 has inspired you to join in some of the great innovations that are taking place in the Quizzing community. The first months of 2021 may indeed be grim ones, but there has never been a better time to get involved in some serious quizzing, or not so serious if you prefer.

Looking back on 2020 purely in Quizzing terms, I like many others have probably never done have much quizzing as I have this year. In fact, there is no probably about it. Playing in 3-4 leagues, daily buzzer quizzes, pub quizzes, Wikiquiz.....the list goes on. The community has really come out in force and I have met some great new people as well as seen more regularly online that I would in reality. A quizzing friend of mine, in a discussion on the subject, used the term "new lease of life" and in many ways that is what has happened to my quizzing in 2020.

Becoming a new parent and moving home in 2019 pretty much wiped out that year for me. Having left the Sunderland Echo Quiz League and not attending GP's or events such as Quiz in North, meant I was quizzing very rarely indeed and not at all at a serious level.  A handful of pub quizzes here and there and running my own pub quiz was all I really had going on. Yes I was still looking at GP papers, viewing league sets online and setting questions but with the void of serious quiz action I was struggling to find the motivation to improve.

A year later and things are very different. It seems a bit awkward writing a a positive post about 2020, but looking at things in terms of purely quizzing, the year has seen a wide range of innovations that have provided enjoyment to thousands of people. Nobody could have predicted the year we would have, but the dedication, hard work and commitment of the people behind the scenes of the various quiz leagues to make things work online has been beyond admirable.

Quizzing has never been more active, and in terms of serious players competing against each other and tackling serious questions, there have never been as many options. As quizzers, we have never had such a luxury of choice and the buck doesn't just stop with the organised events. The social aspect and informal quizzing has been a side effect of the move to quizzing online with late night sessions running into the small hours. A quick post on the relevant facebook pages and you could have a Zoom room full of quizzers in no-time!

Many of the innovations of 2020 will continue long after this horrendous year is over. There has been fundamental shifts in the quizzing community and it will be interesting to see how things pan out. 2021 I am sure will be a better year and one that is full of more quiz than ever!
