Brain of Britain - Round 1 - Match 6

Brain of Britain 2012 - Round 1 - Match 6

First aired 19/12/2011

Brain of Britain 2012 moves onto to its sixth contest of the opening round. This week saw the following competing for a place in the Semi Finals!

Linda Bond
Louis Houghton
Thomas Leaming
Robert Meryl

Sorry if the names are spelt wrongly!

Without further ado Russell got proceedings underway and Linda Bond got off to a solid start with a good question on Prime Ministers wife names but couldn’t add to it. Louis Houghton started well too but again could not string more than one answer but snatched a point when Thomas Leaming stuttered after two right answers. With answers flying in the scores were close but Leaming lead on 3, already this was shaping up to be one of the tightest Brain of Britain contest of 2012!

A stumbling question on alphabetical books of the bible had everyone flapping, I had no clue either and nor did any of the Brain of Britain contenders. Another question on Enoch Powell brought an amusing answer but the scores stood at 4-3-3-2 with Leaming just ahead after round too. No one stood out as being likely to take it from this point but I had a feeling Louis Houghton may prove a strong contender.

At the end of round 3 Thomas Leaming and Robert Meryl who had an impressive run tied with 6 but Louis Houghton was laying behind with 5 points. Linda Bond seemed to be rather quiet and was still stuck on 2. The usual beat the Brain feature attracted a question from a Brain of Britain listener about the Panama Canal and directions which the Brains took some time to get right and also succeeded in a question regarding names of railway stations with 5 consternates in a  row (Knightsbridge).

The contest resumed and Linda Bond again stuttered with another tough question and a mixed round saw Robert Meryl take a two point lead. The following round saw Meryl gain a point from Leaming to stretch his lead and followed it with a storming run which is exactly what you need to win a Brain of Britain first round match. Meryl took his lead to 6 and looked in a strong position to win. A typical example of the fact that one run of good questions being the difference in this short, tough format.

Meryl had another strong start to the round and the writing appeared to be on the wall taking his lead to nine points. A dominating performance going into the last round and a Brain of Britain 2012 contendor for sure! What started as a close contest finished with a runaway winner with Robert Meryl taking it by ten points with an utterly dominating run. Very impressive indeed!

Final Scores

Robert Meryl - 19
Thomas Leaming - 9
Louis Houghton - 6
Linda Bond - 3

On another note, I was looking at the Radio 4 schedules and Brain of Britain will return on Boxing Day as usual at 3pm. Something to relax with amongst all the Christmas frenzy!

Brain of Britain 2012 is shaping up to be an exciting prospect!
