Interview with Jason Hanrahan (Pubsquiz.co.uk)

http://www.pubsquiz.co.uk

In the middle of last week we featured Pubsquiz.co.uk, a place to buy pub quiz questions online, as the first Site of the Week in 2012. As promised I had a brief chat with Jason Hanrahan who runs the site...........

Can you explain a little about your website?
PubsQuiz.co.uk has been around since about 2007, and came about as a result of a conversation with friends at a local quiz night. They suggested a website to provide a weekly quiz, but with my background in software and web development I was much more interested in developing something driven by a database of questions, so that people could generate their own unique quiz based on their particular quiz requirements. Since I am a programmer by day, having worked on projects for Boots, Asda, Argos, Homebase, Kwik Fit amongst others, the site was developed in my spare time and so was a painful time consuming conception. The site underwent a brand refresh about two years ago thanks to the input of my brother, a graphic artist who worked on the Playstation Harry Potter games. The quiz master avatar was his take on my previous less successful attempt.

The website offers the following kinds of service/subscription:
(1) Quiz membership for £12 for 6 months - allows people who want to prepare their own quizzes to build the quiz they require from our large selection of themed quizzes and themed quiz rounds, our full catalogue of picture quizzes and  a random quiz generation wizard which selects from thousands of questions.
(2) Weekly quiz or weekly quiz subscription. For those who want a fully prepared quiz they can just run immediately we have a weekly quiz. This is available on a pay per quiz basis or via money saving subscriptions. It also provides the quiz in two different formats (regular quiz with 6 rounds or 10 questions, or a bingo format quiz with 36 questions played on a grid). Everyone who buys the weekly quiz gets the regular quiz and the bingo style quiz so they can choose which best suits their needs. There is also a growing archive of weekly quizzes to choose from for £3.50 each.

What made you start pubsquiz.co.uk?
We believe that a good quiz should entertain on a number of levels - it should be sufficiently easy that most users feel they can answer maybe 2/3 of the questions, but feel challenged at the same time. The remainder are what seperates the wheat from the chaff so to speak. It should also provide entertainment through humour, controversy or feelings of nostalgia. We try to craft the questions so that they will evoke fond memories, get a reaction from the crowd or encourage chat and discussion. For example we sometime ask questions on controversial or hot topics, and sometimes add a spin to the wording of the question or answer to suggest we hold an opinion to provoke a reaction. We might also choose humorous questions which will get a laugh. We have even produced "guess the joke" picture quizzes so that the players are actively encouraged to debate and discuss the quiz. Most importantly the quiz should be fun.

What makes pubsquiz.co.uk better than other providers?
I would like to think that by comparison with other quiz sites, PubsQuiz.co.uk is has a very distinct identity, is very well organised, well presented, and easy to navigate and use. We are driven by our customer needs and a desire to exceed customer expectations. It is particularly gratifying to note that many of our subscribers are repeat subscribers, and have been using the services we provide again and again for years. We survey our customers every year to see which features they value, how they perceive the site, and to establish what additional features they would like to see developed.

Do you get feedback from your customers?
Our mailing list allows us to keep in touch with quiz enthusiasts, and from time to time we send out free themed quizzes, special offers and even details of television quiz opportunities which are notified to us by production companies. In the past we have been approached by the BBC and Tiger Aspects seeking quiz participants for their shows.

How do you go about setting a quiz?
A huge database of questions underpins the whole of our operations and we continue to enhance and develop this. The ultimate goal is to be able to provide our users with a selection of questions that could be on sport, football, a specific football club or even down to a specific player.

As for myself, although I enjoy a good quiz night as much as anyone else, I'm usually not very good at them. I have the memory of a goldfish and usually find that I'm the member of the team whio confidently suggests we change the answers, only to find the original answer was correct.

Thank you very much for your time
