The Quiz Addict Quiz Trek 2012 #2

Horden Legion  - Sunday Night Quiz

My home town of Horden has not had the best press of the late. The Horden Legion lies about 5 minutes walking distance from my flat and twice weekly hosts a quiz, once on a Thursday and this Quiz on a Sunday Night. I gave my regular quiz at the Moorcock a miss last night in favour of trying out this one.

I already knew before attending that the quiz formed only one part of the Sunday Night Entertainment coupled with raffles and bingo. The crowd was mainly an older one and proceedings kicked off about 9pm with a round of Bingo. I joined in just to be sociable, Ill stick with that excuse the real reason being of course that I wanted to win but had no such luck. The quiz started around 9.20pm ish.

As mentioned, the one downside to this quiz is that its only a small part of the nights entertainment in the Horden Legion. It's simply a set of 20 General Knowledge Questions followed by a Jackpot question. This is not necessarily a bad thing. There were about 10 teams joining and and being "an older crowd" there was no cheating or usage of phones etc.

The questions were well pitched, covered a range of subjects and some of them really got me thinking. There was a nice relaxed pace and feeling to the quiz and it really did seem to fly over. If this quiz say, doubled in the number of questions that were asked it would be by far and away one of the best quizzes in the region but the Horden Legion Sunday Night Quiz is a tad short. The 20 questions were enjoyable but just as you are settling into the quizzing mode its over. The Jackpot question is a gettable one by the sounds of things but it is only won if there is only one team that gets it. Last night 3 teams got the answer meaning no winner and a rollover.

There is not really a lot else to add other than the kind quiz master who, when asking for our score which wasn't given, gave us the question sheet he used for future reference and told us next time we were in just to ask him and we could have the sheets again. Very kind and made us feel very welcome to a new pub! I have talked before on here about how being the "new team" in quizzes around here can be very unwelcoming but thats not the case in the Horden Legion.

The advantages of the quiz on a Sunday then......first off personally its within walking distance and the only quiz I am aware of in Horden on a Sunday night. There are some in the neighbouring town of Peterlee but in this weather its not walkable. In addition, its a relaxed friendly pub, the questions are good and of course with the quiz, raffle and bingo (don't tell anyone I play :)) there is the chance to win some money to pay for the night! The disadvantage of the quiz is just how brief it is, 20 questions. This is probably a good figure for the pub which has the quiz as one part of a Sunday Night entertainment collection but not enough for someone who goes solely for the quiz.

Will I be returning? I can see myself walking down to the Horden Legion on a few Sunday Nights this year, to get a break from the regular Sunday quizzing, and to relax in the friendly atmosphere. I know the Horden Legion do a quiz on Thursday night as well but last night I went there is was mainly under 25's (Im 26....) on Mobile Phones. I will still try it out as part of the Quiz Trek though and cover it on here.

I have a busy week of quizzing planned so there should be a good few more entries in this series of posts this week.....
