Trivial Pursuit 2000s

Image result for trivial pursuit 2000s

You may have noticed in the last few weeks, that a version Trivial Pursuit, titled "2000s" started to appear in stores. I had been looking for a new trivia board game to add to my collection and having seen a post from a fellow quizzer on Facebook, advertising that he had written questions for the game, I decided to buy it and have been playing over the weekend with a non-quizzing partner....a reluctant one at that.

I am in two minds about my opinion on this....

Firstly, the negatives are that the format is not great. Gone are the old Trivial Pursuit Rules that were simple and created longer games. This is very much a "quick fix" sort of game. Although it takes longer to set up that play sometimes!!!

The game involves the usual, collecting the wedges, and the categories are pretty much the same as the normal game. But what makes the game so quick is that not only do you collect wedges by merely passing certain squares, but there are a lot of multiple choice and true and false questions, not to mention the difficulty level is lowered. So, even with a non quizzer, some of these games were lasting a matter of mere minutes before we both nearly had full racks.

There is a whole element of seeing the category and choosing not to answer, passing onto your opponent. If they get it wrong you win a wedge...

Has there ever been a game of trivial pursuit where you can win easily by only answering one question?

There are always 2-3 good questions per card which is the one saving grace.

Taking my non quiz-fan hat off for the moment....this is probably most suited to families and casual players. My non-quizzing playing partner enjoyed it, the questions were pitched right for her and it did make for a fun few geames but I can't see myself going back to it in a rush!

Quiz Book Suggestion

I imagine most of the people reading this will have at least heard, or possibly own, the above title. "The Only Quiz Book You Will Ever Need" is something that, if based on the title alone, may be something you would expect to be full of chestnuts and 10,000 pointless questions...but when you consider this is written by some of the finest quiz players in the country it changes to make this an essential quiz book. Other than maybe the likes of "On the Tip of My Tounge" which is a different style, this is perhaps my favourite quiz book in my collection. I certainly have spent more time with and learned more from this than I have with any other quiz book....It ranges from the gettable to the obscure and goes on various themes throughout. Every question is well written and its a great learning tool as well as being great for testing yourself!

Site Suggestion - Kens Quiz Site

I don't have a links section as such on the blog so tend, from time to time, to post up a few site suggestions of the most useful trivia sites on the internet. One I have been using for years is Kens Quiz Site which can be found HERE

The site is totally free with a wide range of questions available and it must take "Ken" quite some time put it together. All the quizzes are themed so whatever you fancy doing your quiz on its all easy to find with years in the archives. The General Knowledge quizzes are particularly good as they are more often than not very testing and I have much fun trooping through the archives.

Twitter Account

Just to remind any new readers that I post various links to quizzes (and especially links to my periscope music quizzes) up at my Twitter account (@quizaddictblog) so just a reminder if you use Twitter to give me a quick follow and say hi!

Quiz Review - The Blue Bell, Fulwell

Blue Bell, Fulwell (Sunderland) - Tuesday Nights 8.30pm

Over the past few weeks, I have been attending the Blue Bell Quiz in Fulwell (Just outside of Sunderland city centre). It's been running  for some time and shamefully in the 2 years I lived in Sunderland I did not get round to attending. But having a few gaps in my diary I made the effort to go along and certainly didnt regret it.

The quiz is ran by local quizmaster, and league player, Tony Gillan who used to run the Quiz I attended each Thursday in Sunderland and that I labelled on here as the best quiz in town. So I was very pleased when I turned up and realised Tony was doing it.....

The quiz is split into 3 rounds. 12 pictures, 10 current affairs and 20 testing General Knowledge questions with a jackpot at the end. Marking is ongoing and the standard of questions is very high. No filler, no chestnuts and a well written set all round that will suit all players. The quizzes I have played so far have been nice and varied and always questions to ponder long and hard over.

It is busy too with 16 - 20 teams most weeks and the whole night goes without hitch (nice pub too!). Most notably there are no signs of cheating! The Jackpot round is capped at £100. Always a question to have a guess at and the jackpot cannot be split so if more than one players gets it, it rolls over.

All in all, the quiz at the Bluebell in Fulwell is one of my favourite Quiz Nights at present. My only slight criticism would be that's its a little on the short size....30 questions in all and 12 pictures. In addition, with the picture round accounting for over 25% of the quiz it means that a bad picture round can be fatal to your chances as the winning score (out of 42) tends to be around the 36-38 mark.

The Blue Bell also host a Music Quiz on a Monday and a "fun quiz" on a Wednesday but having been to neither I can't really comment but its worth knowing. Don't see many music quizzes around this area so Ill certainly be looking to give that a try!
