Mastermind 2020/2021 - Heat 6

Mastermind 2020/2021

Heat 6

Back up to date now, and with Quizzy Monday returning last night, here is a run down of Heat 6 of Mastermind 2020/2021. With two names familiar to me, taking part in this heat were

-        Bryony Ashcroft

-     Jackie Hunter

-     Colin Wilson

-     Jamie Hall

At the end of the specialist round the standings were as follows

Jamie Hall

The Weimar Republic

10

Jackie Hunter

Cheeses of the UK

9

Bryony Ashcroft

Bridges of London

8

Colin Wilson

Alex Higgins

8

Again a nice mix of subjects. Knowing how passionate Colin Wilson is about sport it was no surprise to see him on a sporting subject and it was great to see another face from the quiz world Jamie Hall line up in the black chair. It was shaping up to be one of the closest episodes of the series….

Bryony was first up to set the marker for the rest to follow and managed to tot up a score of 17 with an impressive range of answering (and a score which would have won other heats) but given the calibre of players to come, I felt as a viewer this heat was going to need a 20+ winning score.

Colin Wilson got off to a flyer with quick, confident answering wasting very little time on the question he didn’t know, a tactic which keeps the round going at a solid pace. A few unlucky misses here and there didn’t hold the round back too much and Colin reached double figures for the GK round and record a score of 19 to put him in the lead.

Jackie had taken on a wide subject earlier in the show and bossed it, but came to the chair needing double figures in her GK round to give her a shot at the Semi Finals. A different approach to Colin, giving herself a few second to ingest the question and answer. And the tactic worked racking up the required 19 with time to spare. A correct answer on the film Philomena meant Jackie took the lead, becoming only the 7th player of the series of hit the 20 mark.

It was down to Jamie, I have quizzed with and against Jamie in the past and know him to be an excellent all round player, and had every faith he would reach the double figures he needed to progress to the Semi Final. (P.s. if you want to see an example of the long questions that could be answered after  a few words that are plaguing this series…check out the Louis Vuitton question in this set). But I am guessing from the body language and the content of the set, that these questions weren’t best suited and a score of 18 was recorded.

Congratulations then to Jackie who reaches the Semi Final. Notable, all four scores in this heat would have been winning (or at least tiebreaking) scores in the previous heat! The length of the questions now is making any score above 20 difficult to achieve.

The next few entries in this series will look at actual quiz books which would make good gifts for the quizzer in your life! I got this last year and have to rank it as one of the finest Music quiz books out there. Rather than being just a collection of "Who had a Number 1 with...." questions, this book is full of greatly researched, cleverley written and interesting quiz questions. One the best music quiz books out there and perfect for some Xmas day fun....

Heat 5

A little delayed on this as I’m playing catch up, but Heat 5 of Mastermind 2020 lined up like this…

-        Edana Guest

-     Alex Hardwick

-     Annabelle Dunwoody

-     Jeremy Sullivan

At the end of the specialist round the standings were as follows

Edana Guest

Vanessa Bell

Jeremy Sullivan

David Bowie

Annabelle Dunwoody

A much more diverse mix of subjects this week than in some of the previous heats in this edition.

Annabelle strode up to the chair first to take this weeks General Knowledge round. A solid GK round was needed to apply pressure on the other contestants  and the round looked promising early on with Annabelle settling into the round well. A stumble on a question on Battleships began a spiral of wrong answers that slowed the scoring. At the end of the round Annabelle had reached 16, a respectable score.

Jeremy Sullivan next and early on a question on the scientific name for Sugar seemed to produce a halt. Its one of those questions you feel you should know, but under the pressure of the lights I imagine the pressure mounts when the answers doesn’t come straight away. The scoring continued and Jeremy notched up points on all manner of subjects but time was against him and he ended the round matching Annabelles 16.

Edana next and needing 8 points to take the lead it looked good early on but the questions seemed not to suit her and the on the whole, a lot of 50/50s seemed to go the wrong way but a after the buzzer answer on Kalasnikov meant Edana had done enough to take the league and give Alex a target.

Alex needed 8 to progress and after questions on Love Island, Teeth Grinding and The Help Alex fell into the nightmare we all would fear going on the show of a string of wrong answers on the GK round. A selection of highbrow questions meant Alex got back on track but the set included not only a few stinkers, but also a few questions so long that by the end I had forgotten what was being asked! (An issue with I imagine is 10-fold worse in the chair). Despite this Alex was within reach as the timer ticked down and had an after-the-buzzer question about 1980s pop (The Communards) which proved costly. With head in hands, Alex knew the third 16 of the round wasn’t enough and congratulations go to Edana who took the victory and moved onto the Semi Final.

Christmas Gift Guide for Quizzers # 5

gain, just like the most recent entry in the series, I think this book has appeared in every one of my Xmas Gift Guide for quizzers lists since I began the blog.

On The Tip of My Tounge by David Gentle is, to quote the Amazon description, "A Quiz Book with a Difference". Tackling a range of subjects the book takes a more list approach to quiz questions rather than just standard Q and A format. But my words don't do it justice....the questions are fresh, fun and innovative and will keep any quizzer busy for hours!

Christmas Gift Guide for Quizzers #4

I think this is one of the many quiz related books that I have recommended every year during the Xmas gift guide and its back again!

The Penguin Classics Book is a beautiful book to look at, but even more importantly, is full of useful and interesting content about a vast range of novels in the Penguin Classics range. A fantastic tome for quizzing, and with the illustrated covers for each title, its a beautiful book to pour over.

Christmas Gift Guide for Quizzers #3

House of Games has hardly been off TV all year, and if you have ever seen it you will know that its a very creative show with unique rounds, that whilst not strictly a quiz show, has plenty in there to keep quiz fans engaged.

This book was released last year and having worked my way through it over the year, I would strongly recommend it for quizzers, or as a gift for the quizzer in your life!. Plenty of original content, fun for all the family and challenging across all levels.
