The Albert Pub Quiz - Sunderland - 7.30pm - Sundays!

The Pub Quiz I run at the Albert has been running for well over a year now, and is always a fun night with a wide range of questions, a unique format and plenty of prizes.

The Albert itself is a great pub located in the heart of Sunderland City Centre on Fawcett Street and the Quiz kicks off at 7.30pm!

The Sunderland Echo Quiz League is currently on a summer hiatus but time is counting down to the start of the new season. Fingers on Buzzers is back!

Following on from yesterdays post about the 30 for 30 podcast, I was pleased to see this week that one of my favourite podcast has made a return for a second series. Fingers on Buzzers is presented by Lucy Port and Jenny Ryan from the Chase. It discusses many issues relating to quiz, interview with key people and plenty of questions every week. Well worth your time

Any sports fans reading, or indeed fans of well made documentaries, will probably already be aware of ESPN's fantastic 30 for 30 series that airs on TV. To my delight, I discovered recently that there is also a podcast series to accompany it! New stories taking a look at famous sporting stories. Each episode lasts about an hour, and regardless of your interest in the particular sport or issues being discussed, you will soon be hooked!

 

Essential listening for sports fans, and plenty of useful quizzing material to get stuck into!

 



World Quiz Champion

 

Belated congratulations to Olav Bjortomt, who a couple of weeks ago, regained his crown as the World Quizzing Champion. A gruelling set of questions, with a field of the best quizzers in the world assembled, Olav too first place and you can find a report from the Times here

 

Olav also writes the daily quiz in the Times paper which is always worth checking out as is the collection of his quiz works which you can find here!

 

 



The Wall Contestant Call

 

I am still not 100% sure whether this has a quiz element to it, but the BBC are looking for contestants for a new Danny Dyer fronted show called The Wall that amongst other things, is mentioning a game involving "knowledge".

BBC - The Hit List

 

Has anyone had chance to take in the latest BBC Saturday Night Quiz Show...The Hit List? In terms of Saturday Night Family Television, its pretty much spot on! Credit to the BBC for giving a music quiz show a push (The only quiz show to be hosted by a married couple to each have had UK Number 1 Singles I would think?) and it works really well. For those getting Popmaster full houses every week it is not going to provide a challenge but there is enough in there to keep enough the most avid music quizzers interested.

Pub Quiz Sunderland - Sundays

 

Despite not being able to blog a great deal, the one thing that has remained consistent over the last few months is my Sunday Night Quiz at the Albert in Sunderland City Centre. The quiz has been running over a year now, celebrated its first anniversary recently and has continued to grow with a great crowd of regulars and what I hope is a fun quiz.

 

If you are in the Sunderland are and looking for a pub quiz, we run every Sunday from 7.30pm and have prizes of around £100-£150 most weeks. The Albert is located on Fawcett Street and is in what used to be The Old Vestry!

My apperance on Fifteen to One

Way back in late January/early February 2018, I took a trip up to Glasgow to appear on Fifteen to One. After Eggheads, Only Connect and two appearances on Brain of Britain, this was perhaps the easiest application process with a simple application form and video involved! It was so long ago now, I forget my feelings on the day, but I remember having two aims a) Not to embarrass myself (which I have done before on broadcast quizzes) and b) try and get to the final 3 in an episode…..

 

…..if you have seen my episodes you will know I didn’t achieve both…..

 

After arriving the night before, we were whisked to the studios around 6am. Placed in the green room, we were told we could have quite a wait on our hands due to the nature of the show, not knowing how many would be needed per episode and such like so we settled in for the day. I met some great people, played board games, distracted myself and eventually got called for an episode after quite some time in the green room.

 

The whole process of filming an episode is quite a long one from the call, to make up, to waiting to go down, to getting set up for microphones etc…..all the various podium poses follow and it’s a long slog, a couple of hours at least, a lot of standing up….but once the game gets going it flies by.

 

As you can tell from a glimpse of my face I was nervous….very nervous which has always been my problem on broadcast quizzes. My brain felt blank and this was evidenced by, in my first two episodes, questions I have got right in pub quizzes a million times, wouldn’t come to me. I was very deflated after the first two episodes, and got back to the hotel very down on my chances to progress. I did have the benefit of a day off to tour Glasgow before my final episode and had a great time with some local quizzers at various quizzes! So all was not lost…

 

The only major talking point from my first episode was my “Wrig…..Wrangler” issue. Wrangler was the correct answer but my failure to get the word out of my mouth correctly meant I was denied the correct answer and out straight away! I did feel it was harsh, especially when “Alan partridge…Steven Coogan” was later allowed but it worked out for me in the end….

 

So I head into the third and final chance I had, nothing to lose and it couldn’t have gone worse than the first two. The look of relief on my face is clear as I got the first question right, adding to it with the second to send me into the second round. My new goal was to hang on as long as possible….but the round went on and I simply wasn’t getting nominated. Luck? Right position? Who knows! But as soon as I became one of only 2 left with all the lives the came panned out….38 questions later I was nominated, got one of the many stopper questions and thanks to some extra luck with Rick’s choices, ended up in the final! Lucky isn’t the word…

 

But, without sounding arrogant, I had a feeling if I got into that final I had a chance. Lightspeed Quiz had given me buzzer experience and I felt confident. I was pleased to make the solid start on the buzzer and once I got the first three questions behind me I was quite happy with how the game flowed. Only one silly slip, “Which Ocean….” Was all I heard and  suddenly realised I needed an answer without having paid attention! To be third on the leaderboard and score over 100 was  beyond my hopes, I was happy to have a trophy to add to my collection and eagerly awaiting to see if I made the final…..

 

 

Overall, the experience was a great one despite the painful performance in the first two. Glasgow is a great city to be left in for 3 days, great company and well looked after my the production team! Sadly, I don’t think I am able to reapply but would urge anyone else to give it a go!

Long time no see

It has been about 3 months since I last blogged, in what has been a very busy period for me both personally and professionally. With a baby on the way in August, a house move any day now and a busy time carrying out my pub quiz hosting, I have barely had time to think let alone blog. So apologies, normal service will resume...

There was also the matter of my appearance on 15 to 1.....More to follow

Reminder....Quiz in the North THIS Saturday

 

I have criminally failed to mention Quiz in the North as much as I should have over the past few years on the blog. The next event is coming up on the 30th March in Stockton and is well worth considering!

 

The event was set up a few years back for quizzers to get together and compete in testing quizzes in a fun, socialable environment with plenty of quizzing action throughout the day. Every event I have been to has been well organised, fun and with great sets of questions and I expect nothing less when the Quiz in the North hits Stockton on March 30th. Ill copy and paste the blurb below from the website.

"The next Quiz in the North Event is going to take place at the Malleable Club on Norton Road in Norton, TS20 2PH on the 30th of March. It's going to hosted by Clive Dunning, and just happens to take place on a very special day for him. Doors open at 11am and the individual quiz written by Rob Hannah will start at 11.30. The afternoon will feature a team quiz written by Tony Gold and there are plenty of good quality places nearby to go for lunch between the quizzes. The club is also within 5 minutes walks of A Weatherspoons and a number of other pubs and restaurants for anyone who wants to socialise afterwards. A fantastic series I have just finished recently, with a new run of episodes just released, this podcast focuses on the History of the Boxing World Heavyweight Championship hosted by Steve Bunce. The 5 live podcast he does is superb on the coverage of current boxing, but this one exceeds that! Detailed and good episode length (around 22 minutes) with some great insight and facts to keep the boxing knowledge in order. Well worth a listen!
