The Cheats????

Although, obviously like every quiz player, I aim to achieve as a higher placing as possible each week I am not obsessed about winning. If alone, or with only my girlfriend, I know at this stage I am not at the standard yet, and lack quiz experience being only 25, to be able to win every week or at least challenge for the win. Thus most weeks the obvious cheating that occurs does not bother me too much!

However, this week I was joined by my parents as our knowledge bases really compliment each other. We had a storming opening few rounds and ended up second by two points. It would have been nice to win for a change and I would not have minded being beaten by such a short gap.

But is was plainly obvious to me that the winning team were cheating! One of the pictures was Jessica Alba and I overheard the conversation "she was in the Fantastic four...cant think of her name". Suddenly the guy who visits the toilet each and ever week at the same times arose, went to the toilet and came back with a whisper in the ear of the team member writing the answers.

This happened again at the same times as every week.....first round after 15 questions, knowing there are only five left and there is little time to cheat before the papers are collected in, he is in the toilet and again second round he is in the toilet. Many a time I have walked into the loo and he has hurriedly placed his phone back into his pocket.

So does cheating matter to you, is it something which bothers you in the normal pub quiz?

As I say, in most weeks it does not even remotely bother me but the one team who are winning by a few points each week are starting to annoy. Most teams know it but the quizmaster doesn't and willingly marks the answers and awards the case.  I think most are too polite to say anything so long will it continue.

Sunday Night Quizzing!

As usual Sunday Night is Quiz night and I headed up to the Moorcock, Peterlee for Bob Garrigans Quiz. From what I am told Bob has been doing quizzes in the area for years and he always delivers a high quality quiz and with a packed house last night, being the Sunday before a Bank Holiday he delivered a corker.

I was joined this week by my parents to make a formidable team. They compliment the gaps in my knowledge well and as it turned out there 10/10 on the themed round of boys names in songs proved to be vital. With 54/64 we came a respectable second earning a little bit of cash and it was fun all round!

I will give you a few of the questions which I can remember and see how well you can do...........

1. Which British City did Hitler intended to the capital of England should the Nazi Invasion have been a success?

2. In a lonely Hearts add what does the abbreviation NUMP stand for?

3. What was used first in warfare...dynamite or barbed wire?

4. Name the only two Premier League Players to have played every minute of every game for their side in the league each season? The clue is that they both play for clubs in the same city

5. In  a deck of playing cards which is the only suit in which the king does not have a mustache?

6. Which fictional character, who appears in both books and films, has the favourite drink known as a Badger?

7. The PGA Golf Championship has taken place in Wentworth this week, which County is the course in?

8. Which Royal Wedding was the first to be televised in colour?

9. Which English Football League ground is the farthest away from any other?

10. What was the nickname of Rugby League Star Martin Offiah......think about the name?

Those were just 10 of the questions that came up last night.

TV - The Million Pound Drop

Last night the current series Channel 4's hit prime time quiz show , The Million Pound Drop, came to and end. I have yet again enjoyed this run of shows greatly and am anticipating the return of the show in Autumn and have even placed a hopeful application to appear on the programme.

Basically for those of you who may have not seen the show, it's presented by Davina Mccall and the object is to battle your way through eight questions and retain the one million pounds you are given. Each question starts off with 4 answers and you must "gamble" your money on a maximum of 3 answers. Place any money on the wrong answer and it drops, hence the title, and is lost forever. Whatever money was placed on the correct answer you keep and so on. The options dwindle down to three for the remaining few questions and to make it even harder the last question ids a 50/50 and all your money must be placed on one answer.

The Questions

Its a very tough game to win large amounts on as the questions are tricky to say the least. In a typical round of eight questions there would usually be one or two questions on that day's events, so you need to have seen the papers or at least watched the news the day of the show. Its all live as well and I have seen questions asked at 9.30pm about events that happened only an hour or two earlier. These questions are often celebrity based so a quick glance at the Sun will not do any harm in this case.

There are usually only one or two questions about actual general knowledge such as "Which of these were built first" etc etc but the show, due to it being prime time, stays away from this area. first and foremost they are aiming at a wide market and do not want, nor recruit, contestants who may otherwise be seen on Mastermind etc. They are usually picking 25-35 year old couples or friends.

Most questions are what I call "debate" questions. Questions intended to get the contestant and viewers debating the answer as the content is usually something few people would know as a fact. This is ideal as it means viewers of all ages and abilities can scrap over answers and it makes for a fun quiz show.

All in all I really enjoy this programme and its ideal viewing for friends and families and you will definetly learn a thing or two whatever your ability!
