Mastermind 2014/2015 - Heat 7

Mastermind 2014/2015 - Heat 7

A very close heat this week until the very end. Congratulations to Hazel Humphreys who notched up 17 points on her GK to earn a comfortable win. John Carrington scored the lowest on the SS round but it did look for a brief moment as if his score of 21 may be enough but as soon as Hazel got into her stride there was no stopping her!

Hazel Humphreys - 28
John Carrington - 21
Neil Madle - 20

Week in Quizzing

The Brunton Shield was again a very enjoyable event. With plenty of quizzers heading down to Newcastle for the annual North East vs Scotland encounter it was a fun afternoon (see previous post if interested). The North East made it 4 wins in a row. Here's to next year!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting reading in the Sunday Times this weekend which lists the viewing figures for the top 10 shows on each channel. University Challenge is very often the number one show on BBC with just under 3 million viewers. But more pleasingly in there at the top end of the charts with 2.23 million (Week of 7th September) was Only Connect. I remember when the show made a big deal about breaking 1 million viewers on BBC Four. They must be over the moon!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of Only Connect, former contestant Stu Hearn has began a very interesting blog HERE. Well worth a look!

Finally I intend to publish my second Quiz Addict Kindle Book this week. It is a sequel of sorts, in terms of content and style, to my first book which is still available HERE

Keep an eye on the blog for more information.

Brunton Shield

The Brunton Shield has, for the past 3 years I have taken part, been one of the highlights of my quizzing calendar. The event pitches teams from Tyne and Wear against Quizzers. In the previous two years we have headed up to Edinburgh to compete but this year the venue was the Old George in Newcastle. A cracking pub in the heart of the city centre.

Strangely there was less of a turnout from the Tyne and Wear quizzers this year than on previous occasions, with 2 teams competing against 3 Scottish teams. In attendance were the likes of Fifteen to One winner Dave McBryan, Mastermind finalist Roderick Cromar, Brian Pendreigh who has appeared on a wide range of shows, Brain of Britain  2014 Semi-Finalist Dave Taylor and recent Mastermind heat winner Mike Foden to name but a few! So as you can imagine the standard was high and I did not envy Barry Howbridge's task of setting the questions to challenge such a crowd.

The format involved 100 questions in teams with the top team from the North East then pairing off against the top Scottish team in the final which was to be individual questions. I was paired with Mike Foden in a team of two. We pulled out some cracking answers and plugged along well but in the end were some distance behind the other North East Team who went into the final to play The Dude Abides.

It was a close contest but the North East Team took a few more risks and nailed the 2 pointers (it was 2 points for an individual answers, 1 if there was a need to confer with the team) giving them a 16-11 victory.

A fantastic quiz all round, a great standard and some superb questions. A great afternoon of quizzing and I am already looking forward to next year!

Mastermind 2014/2015 - Heat 6

Mastermind 2014/2015 - Heat 6

A close fought episode this week. Three former contestants having another bite at the cherry but it was Andrew Teale who strove to victory. I have competed against Andrew at many GP's and always fancied he would win the heat. Good luck in the next round!

Andrew Teale - 24
Louise Broadbent - 21
Jack Young - 20
Andy Crane -17

This Week I Didn't Know...

Based on a different quiz this week hence why there are less pictures. With only 10 Celebrities to identify only one was missed meaning we didn't loose as much ground as usual....A pretty successful quiz this week!

Picture Round

1.

Quite an annoying miss too.....

Answer:

1. Micha Barton

Questions

1.What is FORTRAN?

Did mention the correct answer, our guess was however no where near.

2. "Michaelwood Services" are located on which motorway?

Yawn. Rather dull question and I am bad on motorways at the best of times so it was a guessy guessy question that went wrong

3. Who famously wrote the comedic book "Banjaxed"?

Again nothing to go on. This could have been a good question if written correctly (you will notice when you see the answer).

Answers

1. A Computer Language
2. M5
3. Terry Wogan

Week in Quizzing

One of my favourite quizzing events of the year takes place next weekend. The Brunton Shield, held annually, involves quizzers from the North East of England taking on those from Scotland. This is the third year I have taken place in the event and for the first time in that period the event is being held south of the border in Newcastle. Very much looking forward to it and good luck to all involved.

Interesting article HERE on the David Edwards and his participation in next months European Quiz Championships.

The Twitter feed continue to grow @quizaddictblog is the address. I try to add questions daily as well as various other bits and bobs. Speaking of social media I am also keen on arranging some games on Superbuzzer so will look to be putting a post up later in the week.

This Week I Didn't Know....

Picture Rounds

Brutal one this week and we didn't do too badly. However, the misses below as usual set us back but luckily we had done enough on the questions!

1.

Went down totally the wrong route on this and was trying to think of her name based on the fact she presented GMTV at some stage.....which she never did!

2.

Never close.......When given the answer I had heard her name and knew her major song, but can't recall ever seeing a picture of her until this.

3.

Very similar picture used minus the trophy....maybe that would have helped! Usually good on sport and this is certainly the picture I spent most time on during this round! Grrrr...

4.

Particularly annoyed. Was shown a photo of her at about this age in the quiz. I got the Mastermind question about her last week as well as a question in a book I was working through but couldn't recognise her!

1. Fay Ripley
2. Demi Lovato
3. Louis Oosthuizen
4. Diana Rigg

Questions

Strong week this week so only a few errors along the way...

1. The Augusta Golf course famously features a tree dedicated to which American president?

Sport being a strong point for me I couldn't get to this answer! All those years watching the Masters and it obviously didn't stick. I imagine this may well be a chestnut that I have missed.

2.  In which English county are St Cuthbert’s Head and Thirlwall Castle?

Last question of the night and just didn't ring any bells at all

1. Dwight E Eisenhower
2. Northumberland
