Xmas Gift Guide #10 - Linkee

One of the ever presents on my Gift Guide over the years has been Linkee. The game shot to fame initially when it got some exposure on Dragons Den and is now in its 4th edition, available across many high street stores. The game is simple and fun to play, each card as 4 questions all linked in one way. One player reads out the questions, the first to spot the link wins. The questions are well written, the links are consistently inventive and its the perfect pick up and play game for the festive period.

Xmas Gift Guide #9 - A Matter of Facts - Shaun Williamson

I am taking a little break in this series from focusing on Quiz Books, to mentioning once of the finest books I have read on the subject of Quiz. I first encountered Shaun Williamson at a Grand Prix in what must have been 2013 and he has been a serious quizzer ever since. (And a good one at that!). In this book Shaun takes a look at the UK quiz scene, quizzing in general and his own journey to improve his rankings. Its superbly written, captivates quiz and the scene and the passion of quizzers better than any book I have ever encountered on the subject.

Of course the below books are also very much worth looking into for books about quizzing but for me Shaun's takes the biscuit...

Xmas Gift Guide #8 - BBC Quiz Show Books

Back to the Christmas guide guide and I am still on the subject of Quiz Books and this time its three books from BBC Quiz Shows - Namely - Mastermind, University Challenge and Only Connect. The BBC books are always high quality, earlier in the series I suggested the Brian of Britain book and even the likes of the Question of Sports books are always quality.

But those listed below serve as ideal gifts for the quizzer in your life, or as I keep saying a little Xmas treat for yourself. The questions are plentiful, high quality and well crafted. Hours of fun to be had!

OQL Buzzer Quiz

It has been a hectic few weeks, hence the lack of posts, and I am only just getting round to mentioning the fabulous OQL Buzzer Quiz event which took place in Birmingham on the 13th November. 30 teams of quizzers from across the UK and Ireland came together to square off in a series of matches, that are best described as University Challenge style buzzer games (with the option to steal bonuses).  I will post a full write up of some point, of what I have no hesitation in saying is my favourite ever quiz event, but see below a video from Gareth Kingstons excellent All Things quiz blog about the day as well as the final which was...well.....just take 40 minutes to watch it, that's all I will say...

Xmas Gift Guide #7 - Classic FM Friendly Quiz Book

The gift guide continues with another quiz book from my collection - Classic FM Friendly Quiz Book. I often find that Classical Music is one area, that if you put the work in, can reap great rewards in quiz. At every level from the pub quiz to the league competitions. This book is a great primer and a great test of that knowledge. With over 1000 questions the book looks at everything from straight up trivia questions, to match the symphony name to the composer style rounds, to guess the decade to themed rounds of operas and composers. It really does have a great coverage of subjects and it is all golden content you would expect to come up time and time again!

Xmas Gift Guide #6 - BBC 6music Quiz Book

Xmas Gift Guide - #6  6Music Quiz Book

The Quiz Book suggestions keep on coming and the latest suggestion is the fabulous BBC Radio 6 Music Quiz Book. Released in 2016, this is another quiz book I rarely see in stores but is well worth hunting down online. The book contains over 3000 fresh questions on  huge rage of music in line with what the station itself covers. This isnt a "pop" music quiz as such but its hard to pin point as it pretty much covers everything else. But it's not "niche" to the extent of not being useful. These are all names, bands, songs and albums you will hear come up in all manner of quizzes.

The questions are unique, well written and its clear time and effort was taken into putting the book together and I for one have certainly found it useful and interesting to work though!

Quiz Addict Podcast

The Quiz Addict Podcast is still going strong with twice-daily episodes issued, with the occasional bonus episode thrown into the mix. Appraoching 200 episodes now!

Xmas Gift Guide #5 - The Penguin Quiz Book

Again, I continue the theme of suggesting what I think are useful/enjoyable quiz books in the gift guide series and this entry focuses on a literature theme booked 'The Penguin Quiz Book'. Released in 2019, the book contains a wide range of unique and interesting question, broken down in 10 parts. The sections in each part include themed rounds, connections, quotes, buzzer style who am I questions and more. The answers contain extra information and it a treasure chest of great content that will not only boost your literature knowledge but provide a stiff test of it!

Xmas Gift Guide #4 - The Brain of Britain Quiz Book

Xmas Gift Guide #4 - The Brain of Britain Quiz Book

In case you haven't gathered by now, the first dozen or so entries in this series are all going to be about Quiz books I recommend as being useful revision tools for yourself or the perfect gift for the quizzer in your life.

This book , the Brain of Britain Quiz book, has appeared on my list for the last few years and is likely to do so until they update it. This edition is from 2017 and was released without much publicity but is widely available on Amazon.  The book contains over 2000 new questions split into Rounds of 40. As with the actual show itself, the questions are challenging, testing and cover a wide syllabus and despite a few rounds to "ease you in", the difficulty ramps up early and this there is very little room for filler.

Answers come the page after the questions which is always better than flicking through to the back of the book, and some additional information is included. Its presented in a hardback form and will take some time to work through. A perfect gift to have by your side over the Xmas period and one which is well worth picking up for yourself!

Pop Culture MIMIR Final

Congratulations go to Tom Adams on victory in Season 2 of the Online Quiz League Pop Culture Challenge. In a very competitive final (video link to follow) Tom maintained a lead from the halfway stage and never let it slip.

It has been a fantastic season all round and if you keep an eye on the website HERE you will see when the next season is advertising for players. In the mean time if Highbrow content is more your thing check out  the below link to the International Culture Challenge which begins next month

What is MIMR?

Since posting up about the OQL MIMIR  Competitions earlier in the week, I have had a few messages asking about what a MIMIR is. Just in case anyone out there is also keen to learn more about the format, my wisest move is to direct you to the excellent video above from Gareth Kingstons All Things Quiz Channel which explains in glorious detail.

And below is a video from the Pop Culture MIMIR ran by the OQL (Online Quiz League) which shows you 4 top quizzers in action on the MIMIR Format.

Xmas Gift Guide #3 - The Book of Pub Quizzes

The Book of Pub Quizzes

The latest suggestion in my Xmas Gift Guide for Quizzers is this hidden gem. I saw Hidden Gem as Ive never seen it in a store, and Ive never really came across it on Amazon until I saw it on the Wordsworth website whilst looking for something else. The book is packed with great content and thousands of quizzes written by David Rothwell. The first part of the book has 40 questions that start with the letter A, then B, then C and so on, which prove more challenging than you may think as a lot of effort has been put into the writing. The book then goes into more themed quizzes but the quality remains.

What I liked about this book is as well as containing a lot of original content and tough question, it also covers the 'chesnuts' which are all essential for quizzers old and new to refresh on!

International Culture Challenge - Sign Up Now

With the Pop Culture Challenge coming an end this week, the Online Quiz League is launching its International Culture Challenge (MIMIR format individual quiz) in November and there is still time to sign up. You will get the chance to compete against some of the finest quizzers across the globe and tackling some questions from the best writers out there! The format works in a way whereby you will play people of your own level after a couple of games meaning games will be close and competitive. I can't recommend the OQL events enough and if you are interested in signing up click HERE

Xmas Gift Guide #2

The second post in my Xmas gift guide sticks with the Quiz Book theme and is the excellent Bamber Gascoignes Challenging Quiz Book. This was released way back in 2007, but throughout the years I have owned it, it has been one my favourite and most useful quiz books.

The book contains 200 rounds of 10 questions each, most of which are at the more challenging end of the scale. There is no filler and very little to "ease you in". The book hits you from the off with unique, refreshing and provoking questions for quizzers of all levels and interested. The rounds are themed in a fashion and each answer page provides additional facts which will help cement the knowledge!  Working through this book will certainly benefit your quizzing and its a fun book to treat yourself with or give to that quizzer in your life!

Xmas Gift Guide #1

Every year since starting the blog I have posted some form on end of the year guide to my favourite and most useful quiz books of the last year and indeed general books/games etc that may serves as good gifts for the quizzer in your life!

If you are new to the blog on the back of hearing the podcast, then these are the posts I am referring to in recent episodes of the podcast. If you click the link, regardless of what you end up buying then it will help towards the running costs of the podcast. Much appreciated!

Anyway....

On with the first recommendation and it is a repeat from last year, as not only have I enjoyed this book so much, but I feel its an ideal gift for the music quizzer. David Hepworth has written a lot of quality factual work and used his knowledge to produce what I am tempted to suggest is the best music quiz book on the market.

The book goes for quality over content and produces a wide range of themed rounds with questions that feel fresh, provoke interest and will challenge people of all quizzing abilities. Its ideal for collaborative work but equally good as a base for learning and improving your own knowledge. The answer pages come directly after the questions and include descriptions and additional information...what more can you want,

Coming in a lovely hardback sleeve, this is a great present idea but also great for your own use. If you do buy it , let me know what you think!

Quiz Bowl League - Call for players

The Quiz Bowl League launched around 2 months ago, and without blinking the first season is almost over! Quiz Bowl is not something I have ever really had the chance to do, so I was very keen to partake in the league and overall its been a superb, smoothly run experience. The questions are superb, the 7 divisions are well spread out and its a fantastic chance for people not usually given the chance to compete in Quiz Bowl to play!

Season 2 is now open for sign ups.....check it out HERE

Online Quiz League - Season 5 - Call for Players and Teams!

The Online Quiz League, which was launched around 18 months ago, is currently on a mid season break with Season 5 due to start on 29th September 2021. This is the perfect chance to get involved!

The league was launched at the start of the first UK lockdown with the intention of providing quizzing action for the UK quizzing community and beyond. The league has grown season on season and continues to attract a wide range of players.

With multiple divisions, promotions and relegations and spin off competitions, there is something for everyone in OQL. Yes, the top divisions contain the finest quizzers in the country such as TV's Chasers and Eggheads, but the team have done a great job structuring the divisions meaning no matter how experience a quizzer you are, you will be playing at a level similar to yours!

The league takes place every Wednesday at 8pm (UK Time) and its played in teams of 4. You can enter as a team, or if you are an individual entering, you will be placed on a scratch team.

I am sure I speak for the hundreds of other quizzers who have played in OQL when I say it quickly became a weekly highlight and shows no sign of slowing down as society re-opens.

All information is HERE and if you do sign up please quote QuizAddict (or Daniel Fullard) for your referral information.

Pop Culture Challenge

OQL (Online Quiz League) is still taking registrations for its Pop Culture Challenge. An individual quiz in MIMIR format to test your knowledge of all things pop culture. Having played in the first competition earlier this year, I am over the moon that a second season is only weeks away. The questions were always well written, interesting and produced close contest and after 2-3 weeks the matches become ranked, so you play people of similar ability. Its a great concept, very cheap to enter and very much worthwhile. The perfect "foot in the door" for anyone new to the competitive quizzing world. Full details to sign up can be found HERE and if you do sign up please mention the Quiz Addict!

Quiz Week - All Things Quiz

The latest Quiz Week video from Gareth Kingston excellent All Things Quiz!

The Quiz Addict Podcast

After meaning to do this for a couple of years now, I am finally just about set to launch the Quiz Addict Podcast. I am hoping to release episode starting in August 2021 and it will be a quiz-question based podcast.

Each episode will contained 15-20 questions for you to have a go at! I have found that in the podcasting world there are tons of "game show" style podcasts where you can hear a contestant playing along, but very few that are designed for just the solo listener. 'Plenty Questions' by Lucy Porter pretty much provided this over 2020 with 100 episodes doing exactly that! But with that seemingly at an end now, and not much else out there I thought it would be a good time to launch.

Episodes will come in 4 varieties - Pub Quiz (easier, tamer questions with a focus on pop culture...things I wouldn't be scared to put in a basic pub quiz I host) General Knowledge (much harder sets, aimed at league style players and those wanting to improve) and then themed sets (based on user request, events going on at the time and whatever takes my fancy!). I will also be producing a weekly current affairs quiz which I am sure some people will find helpful.

Ill post all the links up once the first few episodes are sorted, and I look forward to the feedback

Tokyo 2020 Olympics Quiz - 250+ Questions

I am in the middle of producing a huge revision set for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Like many aficionados I have been living on Tokyo time for the past week and intend to do so for the week to come. I have though set aside to put together a daily revision question set, as lets face it, we all know this content is going to come up in every form of quiz for the next year or so.

Usually I would just post the questions up, but given the time I have put into the set I am happy to send it to anyone who pops a donation to paypal to the side. (Button to the side or fully234@hotmail.com - suggested donation £3). The set will be finalised within 48 hours of the Olympics ending and will be a minimum of 250 questions (Probably closer to 400) about the Tokyo games.

MK Quiz League

The Milton Keynes Quiz League came to an end this week with Park Splits taking the title in their second season in the online version of the contest.

Due to the lockdown, the league opened out for the last two seasons and allowed people to play from outside the region (as long as the team always fielded 2 home players). I was hooked up with a great team and Monday nights became a weekly quiz highlight!

Big thanks to Ed Ficek who runs the league, and writes every set, and of course my team at the Watts Arms. Its been a fun season and if you are close to the Milton Keynes region and looking for a quiz league then I would urge you to check out the website and get involved. HERE

I will continue to keep an eye out on the sets and of course if I am ever in the area, will be popping into the Watts Arms to sample the beer that has always looked so good from across Zoom!

Podcast Suggestion

I have mentioned on the blog before that one of my weak areas in quizzing is, and probably always will be, animals. For some reason the subject matter just will not stick! I am a huge fan of the BBC range of podcasts that are out there (Great Lives, You Used to Be Dead, In our Time, Witness etc) and this is another great one. Nice short episodes looking at the ways in which animals have helped in the design of various technologies etc

All the episode can be downloaded here or on most of the main podcast services.

Quiz Site Suggestion - Garbage Collector

If you haven't discovered "Garbage Collector" then I highly recommend it. It can be found HERE

The site is written by quizzer Ann Gav and contains a daily doze of around a dozen 'lowbrow' questions which are great for boosting knowledge. The questions are pitched at various levels so there is something for everyone and not a day goes by when I don't learn something for these, and many times these have later proved very useful indeed!

Each video is nice and short, sharp and to the point with plenty of images to back up the discussion. The channel has dozens of videos ranging from the big-names to the more obscure and is well worth your time!

Book Suggestion: Nice to See It, To See It, Nice: The 1970s in front of the Telly - Brian Viner

Just a quick book suggestion today and it comes in the form of  the Brian Viner work 'Nice to see it, to see it nice: The 1970s in front of the Telly'. Its part memoir/part history British TV in the 1970s and in terms of facts useful for quizzing it is packed full of them! Excellent tales, summaries and information on the kind of programmes that are asked about all the time in quizzing. Being 35, a lot of these shows are well before my time so I am always tripping up on them in quizzes and books like this are essential to me, to keep the knowledge going.

Well worth your time and aside from its quizzing value, its a very good read!

10 Years of The Quiz Addict!

With everything going on it has escaped my attention that I launched this blog now over 10 years ago! Although I've blogged some years more than others, I was pretty surprised when I realised 10 years had passed since I set up this blog. So much has happened since in both my personal life and quizzing life, but thanks to everyone who has ever read the blog, posted a comment, followed an amazon link or used any of the questions I have posted!

Quizzing in Lockdown: Online Quiz League

The Online Quiz League was launched a few weeks into the first Lockdown and had the first week of the first season in April 2020. Over a year later, and over 1000 matches later, the league continues to grow and is certainly something that will outlast lockdown. Full information on the league can be found HERE

The league was created as the brainchild of Jon Stitcher and since that initial launch has expanded into what I think, its the largest quiz league on the planet. The divisions keep growing, the player talent keeps increasing and some of the countries finest quizzers line up every Wednesday to compete! I was placed together with a scratch team, initially in Division 1 but dropping off to Division 2 for the past few seasons, and we have since gone on to enter several other events together.

On a personal level, the league has given me access to a style of quiz I simply don't have locally. The 4v4 individual question format is something I have always wanted to be part of, but the local league here in Sunderland is a bit different and not to my tastes, so after leaving that I had given up hope of league quizzing for the forseeable. But OQL changed that....

The format does take some adjusting too, especially in Season 1 when it was a No-Free-Guess rule, but after played dozens of games now in the format it has became second nature. There are friendlies available every week and usually loads of post quiz action going on, so the social aspect of the league is just as important as the main quiz!

Every online quiz format is going to face challenges when normality fully returns, but I think OQL has built up such a loyal and committed userbase that it should continue to grow and grow. It has long been one of the highlights of my week, and the fact you can log in, compete in a high quality quiz against the best players in the country, from the comfort of your own home is something that will hopefully never lose its appeal.

Quizzing in Lockdown: Quarantine Virtual Quiz League

As pubs around the country closed their doors, the thousands of quizzers around the country who played regularly in the many leagues on offer suddenly found themselves with free evenings. Dave Tilley, who has written for several quiz leagues, formulated the Quarantine Virtual Quiz League (QVQL) and attracted a wide range of players from TV Eggheads and Chasers to quiz league regulars to quiz newbies. Two divisions soon formed and as Season 3 continues to roll on, the league is still going strong.

I was lucky enough to be teamed up with a great team of players for another league (to mention later) and we decided to enter this league and on the whole have really enjoyed it. Its a typical 4v4 individual question style league with all questions written by the teams involved. It takes place every Tuesday at 9pm and with the diversity of setters, you never quite known what yo expect when you turn up! With 3 seasons launched, two cup competitions and a great post-quiz scene Tuesday night quickly became one of the highlights of my week.

In fact, the post-quizzing action in QVQL is always great fun and there are always people throwing questions at each other in the Zoom room late into the night! Many 2am sessions have been had and it has been great to have such a "social" option during lockdown when other opportunities weren't there!

The league is entirely free to play, and like many quizzes, I am grateful to the team who ensure everything runs well! I for one certainly hope it continues long after lockdown is distant memory...

p.s. the League doesn't have a website but if you are keen to play pop me a message and Ill put you in touch with the relevant people!

The growth in Online Quizzing competitions continues with the launch of an online quiz bowl league. All the details can be found HERE and if you do decide to register then please give The Quiz Addict a mention.
